University of Toronto Library – eBooks User Experience Study

We have ended the User Experience study and will have a public report and presentation materials available in August, 2008. Thank you to all who participated!

University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) is sponsoring an internal research study of e-Books use, starting in January 2008. Our aim is to primarily learn about the student experience with discovery, use, and adaptation to electronic books (e-Books), which are being added to the University collection in large numbers. UTL plans to use the information learned from this study to improve the design and integration of online delivery services for e-Books to better serve students, and to improve our delivery effectiveness with 3rd-party and Publisher resources.

The study has been organized and planned by Dr. Peter Jones with Warren Holder and Peter Clinton in Information Technology Services.

Overview

Since late 2005, UTL has acquired over 30,000 e-Books and student usage shows exponential adoption of the online volumes. There is little consensus among libraries or publishers regarding the best design for delivery of e-Books, and there is literally no research available on how scholars use and experience online e-Books, in terms of their access, preferred uses, and how they are compared with printed volumes. The major publishers of e-Books have also not conducted user studies to date; we have involved three publishers in the support of this study to better address their questions as well as the library’s needs.

Redesign Research will conduct a user experience research study focused on the current use of e-Resources, e-Books and related content and the expected trends of use in the university. The study starts in January 2008, and will be largely completed by April 2008.
